Summer round-up

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

AND it’s over… well almost. Up in the cold north those 2 months (more like 3 if you’re into positivism) of summer seems like the only highlight in most people’s lives. Summer and Christmas – apparently that’s what it’s all about. Everything leads up to long events that have far too much expectations attached to them, and they are over before you even realized they started. When it comes to summer there’s one thing I can’t seem to wrap my head around. If the weather isn’t wonderful EVERY SINGLE DAY, it’s all a big waste!

If people spent a little more time worrying about the things they can actually control… well I’d at least have one less thing to bitch about :p

No really. I like summer. Lazy days, the smell of fresh cut grass, sipping white wine on the porch at midnight, fresh strawberries, and of course music. I’m well aware that music isn’t really a summer phenomenon, but for some reason I find it to be the perfect time of year to have time for it. Festival season adds new names to my list of things to check out (and I didn’t even attend a single one), and there’s nothing better than blasting some music on the car stereo with the windows down and all that (if there’s no sunroof you just have to make do with what you’ve got).

The soundtrack of my summer has definitely been Lissie‘s “Catching A Tiger”. In the car, on the stereo at home, on the stereo at work when alone at the office, or through headphones when you simply can’t sleep because of the heat.

I’m certainly not the only one who’s had this album on heavy rotation recently, and hopefully it still has several years of life left in it.

Shakma (Drunken starlit sky)

The winter of 2005/2006 this song accompanied me on many walks in absolute darkness. My favorite track from Leaves’ “The Angela Test”.

On a day like today

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

If everything went according to plan in this life I would be celebrating my father’s 60th birthday today. Instead I’m spending the evening listening to music that reminds me of what was and could have been. Music always helps me do that and it really is the best way to get close to the real memories.

Everyone knows The Beatles, and my generation can most likely thank our parents for giving us that knowledge. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is probably my favorite. George Harrison was the biggest provider of quality in that bunch.

Knowledge handed down again.

Some of the strongest memories I have from my childhood is definitely long drives (they seemed very long back then) with Dire Straits flowing out of the car speakers. The sound wasn’t great back then but I can still feel the atmosphere when I hear a Dire Straits tune on the radio these days. Close to chills.

Nowadays we only run into this kind of music on various Guitar Hero or Rock Band games. I know someone who might have loved playing both Hendrix and The Beatles on a plastic pretend guitar.

Ethereal has never been more fitting.

It’s all too beautiful.

I could go on and on…

Tv themes medley

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

This certainly put a smile on my face. Nice little theme medley covering everything from “X-Files” to “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”. And no – that’s not two people… really.

Make your own sunshine

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

New design once again. I needed something to do while waiting for spring to arrive.

To go with the new theme; The talented Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse has left us, we’re left to make our own sunshine. When we do however – Let’s hope to keep it for a while.

Lars and the Hands of Light

Friday, February 12th, 2010

So far this year, catching up on releases from already known artists have proven to be more than enough for me. Then I came across Lars and the Hands of Light‘s “Me Me Me”, and had to check out their debut album “The Looking Glass”, released January 25th on Crunchy Frog. You ought to do the same.

Catchy indie pop is what comes to mind at first, but there are other genres beneath the surface. Electro elements come into play now and then and other times you feel like you’ve been brought back to the 60s.  Already mentioned first single “Me Me Me” has true hit potential, and the album has plenty more to offer in the hit department as well as tunes in need for a second spin before they catch on. A good addition to the roster of excellent Danish music for sure. Looking more into the background of the band it turns out lead man Lars actually was guitarist in Junior Senior (another Danish success story). You can easily dance to some of this, or just sit still and enjoy the groove. Check out the video for “Me Me Me” below.

Top tracks of 2009

Friday, January 1st, 2010

To sum up the year now behind us I also created a Spotify playlist to go along with it. If you’re lucky enough to be using this fabulous piece of software go here to get it.  If you’re not? Well here’s the tracklist. I have to admit I was much more of a track listener than usual in 2009, simply because playlists and mixtapes are the way to go when you play most of your music in the car. I even managed to find a few desirable tunes on the radio which is the only way to enjoy music while working in an office. 2009 had a lot of beauties to offer – hopefully 2010 will bring more!

Best albums of 2009

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Usually when I set out to compile a list of my favorite albums of the year I already know who’s going to be on top. This year however the difficult task was not to find enough albums to fill a list of 25, but rather how they would rank. When I can’t even make out my absolute favorite there’s only one thing to do – listen once more – and then once more. If that doesn’t work? You might want to listen to that one again. Needless to say these albums have been played several times, which leads me to believe they’ll also stand the test of time. For the first time each and every one of them actually MEAN something to me, and I’m positive I won’t easily forget any of them. Like last year I bring you quotes from some reviews that said it all. So here they are: MY favorites of 2009.

Sharing is easy

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Sharing music is easier than ever before…. So here’s a chance for you to check out one of the albums I purchased today; AM‘s wonderful “Side by Side – Duets, vol. 1“. I love duets that aren’t cheesy. Included are covers of “I’ll Be Your Mirror” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

AM is one of those thesixtyone discoveries. Like what you hear? Check out 3 additional acoustic versions here. I ended up buying “Future Sons & Daughters” as well.
