Lars and the Hands of Light

Friday, February 12th, 2010

So far this year, catching up on releases from already known artists have proven to be more than enough for me. Then I came across Lars and the Hands of Light‘s “Me Me Me”, and had to check out their debut album “The Looking Glass”, released January 25th on Crunchy Frog. You ought to do the same.

Catchy indie pop is what comes to mind at first, but there are other genres beneath the surface. Electro elements come into play now and then and other times you feel like you’ve been brought back to the 60s.  Already mentioned first single “Me Me Me” has true hit potential, and the album has plenty more to offer in the hit department as well as tunes in need for a second spin before they catch on. A good addition to the roster of excellent Danish music for sure. Looking more into the background of the band it turns out lead man Lars actually was guitarist in Junior Senior (another Danish success story). You can easily dance to some of this, or just sit still and enjoy the groove. Check out the video for “Me Me Me” below.

Metric news

Metric’s upcoming album “Fantasies” is now available for pre-order. It’s available in 4 different packages ranging from the big one with all the extra stuff to the simple digital download, more info here. I went for the “Hardcover Digipack + Digital Download” pack, which means in addition to the 3 track download I got today, I’ll be able to download the album on March 31st.

The 3 tracks that everyone pre-ordering gets is the album version of “Help I’m Alive”, an acoustic version of “Gimme Sympathy”, and a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Nobody Home” with Jimmy Shaw on piano + vocals.

At the same time Metric makes yet another song available for preview on their website + myspace. If “Help I’m Alive” and the newest “Gimme Sympathy” are any indication the album will be sublime. With all these acoustic versions popping up I’m only waiting for them to announce the release of an acoustic version of the entire album. Or maybe I’m just dreaming.

Go visit Metric’s myspace and Metric’s official site. Now!

Doves are releasing their new album “Kingdom of Rust” April 6th. Head over to doves.net to download a track from the forthcoming titled “Jetstream”, and watch the video for the first single “Kingdom of Rust” below.

I think this might be good.

Just around the corner

Teitur has scheduled a Scandinavian release of “The Singer” February 11th, while the rest of the world will get it during March/April. MySpace gives you the title track.

Girls in Hawaii releases “Plan Your Escape” in Belgium February 13th, followed by a European release February 19th. Their 2005 debut “From Here to There” desperately needs a proper follow-up, and if first single “The Farm Will End Up In Fire” is any indication I might get my wish. Head over to their MySpace for a preview.

The National Bank releases their second album “Come On Over To the Other Side” February 11th. A Week later Kaizers Orchestra follows with their fourth studio album titled “Maskineri” (Machinery). All is good here in Norway… To top it all Ane Brun‘s new album “Changing Of The Seasons” is being released March 12th.

“Heretic Pride” is the title of The Mountain Goats‘ new album, out February 18th.

“Midnight Boom” from The Kills is scheduled for a March 10th release.

It’s about to “Get Awkward” when Be Your Own Pet releases their second album March 17th in UK and Europe, and March 18th in the US. March 18th also brings “A Mad and Faithful Telling” from Devotchka, as well as Joseph Arthur‘s “Could We Survive EP”. Apparently there’s a lot to come from Mr. Arthur in 2008.

Guillemots are also set to release “Red” in March, not sure when exactly. Whenever, I’m sure it will be good! As with several other releases that might surprise me over the next couple of months.

Looking further ahead, the last I heard Metric are looking at a June release of their so far nameless album. Judging by the slower more mature version of “Give Me Sympathy” first heard at The Sound Academy in Toronto a few days ago (footage below), work is progressing quite well.
