On a day like today

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

If everything went according to plan in this life I would be celebrating my father’s 60th birthday today. Instead I’m spending the evening listening to music that reminds me of what was and could have been. Music always helps me do that and it really is the best way to get close to the real memories.

Everyone knows The Beatles, and my generation can most likely thank our parents for giving us that knowledge. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is probably my favorite. George Harrison was the biggest provider of quality in that bunch.

Knowledge handed down again.

Some of the strongest memories I have from my childhood is definitely long drives (they seemed very long back then) with Dire Straits flowing out of the car speakers. The sound wasn’t great back then but I can still feel the atmosphere when I hear a Dire Straits tune on the radio these days. Close to chills.

Nowadays we only run into this kind of music on various Guitar Hero or Rock Band games. I know someone who might have loved playing both Hendrix and The Beatles on a plastic pretend guitar.

Ethereal has never been more fitting.

It’s all too beautiful.

I could go on and on…
